Assam Academy for Cultural Relations
Fostering integrity and unity through culture since 1960
Who We Are
Among the many reasons and factors behind the establishment of ‘ASSAM ACADEMY for CULTURAL RELATIONS ’ unity and integration amongst all the ethnic people in particular and all the people in general was one of them. The main objective of ‘ASSAM ACADEMY’ was to unite the society by following the path of culture (social history in a sense) and literature. When due to some political or sociological issues a society or a state gets divided or bifurcated, what surety will be there in the minds of the common people to hold on to keep their unity unaffected? To follow the path of culture and literature is the only way to keep the unity amongst people alive. The great modern mind of Assam, the scholar- Dr. Birinchi Kumar Barua took that step six decades ago from now, i.e. in 1960. Now it is the time for us to follow the path of the legendary Mr. Barua.
In that critical period ( the time of Assamese Language Movement in 1960) of mutual suspicion and ill feeling between the Assamese and other major communities residing in composite Assam, Dr. Birinchi Kumar Barua conceived the idea of a harmonizing institution which, without meddling in political affairs, would try to smoothen the path of integration and allay mutual suspicion by cultivating cultural contacts with different communities. The formation of such a type of institution was a great desideratum in an atmosphere of mutual suspicion and supposed or real aggrieved feelings. The main objective of the newly organized institution was to cement the rift by evoking the sense of Indianans and to bring about a harmonious relation among different language speaking communities of Assam.
Dr. Barua with the help of LakshmiprasadDatta of Dibrugarh managed to get a donation of five thousand rupees from the H.B.Kanoi of Dibrugarh. This amount, though meager, helped in laying the foundation of the institution. The founding members of the Assam Academy were Birinchi Kumar Boarua, Dr. S.K. Bhyun, Devakanta Barua, Aswini Kanta Barkakoti, Mrs. Rajabala Das, Bichitra Narayan DuttaBarua, Rohini Kanta Barua, Praphulla data Goswami, Satyendra Nath Sarma, Navakanta Barua and a few others. Birinchi Kumar Barua naturally headed the institution as the first president, and Praphulla data Goswami and Satyendra Nath Sarma as Secretary and Joint-Secretary respectively. Sri Biswanarayan Sastri was nominated as the treasurer. With such stalwarts, the Academy started its journey and today it is embarking upon many more ventures relevant to our times.
